THE NEW CREATURE IN CHRIST
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (II Corinthians 5:17).
Christians are brand new people on the inside. The Holy Spirit gives them new life, and they are not the same anymore. We are not reformed, rehabilitated, re-educated, we are a new creation, living in vital union with Christ (Colossians 2:6,7). We are not merely turning over a new leaf on life; we are beginning a new life unde a new master. There is no maybe or perhaps about it. It is a definite fact that a man in Christ is a new creature, and all born again believers are in Christ. All spiritual blessings are possible by means of His finished work. In Him all spiritual needs are supplied. All born again believers are baptized into the body of Christ, united to that body by the baptism of the Holy Spirit the very moment of the spiritual birth. Apart from being in Christ there is no hope for mankind (Colossians 1:20-29).
This does not say that one should be a new creature or that one should live the life of a new creature. Those things are true, but the statement goes deeper than that. The person who believes in Jesus, trusting Him as Saviour, instantly becomes a new creature. He does not grow into a new creature, he is born a new creature instantly. The Greek word translated creature means creation. It denotes the act of creating (Romans 1:20). It refers to a created thing or creature (Romans 1:25). Believers are created in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:10). The meaning of this new creature is expressed in Ephesians 4:24; And that you put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. When one believes unto salvation there is a change so definite and marvelous that he becomes a entirely new being. Even though the flesh remains flesh, the Spirit of God in the heart beccomes master of the creation. One does not gradually become a Christian through a process of study are religious rituals. When an unbelieve hears and believes the Gospel, the message of salvation, and by faith receives the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary, that person is instantly created a new man.
The Christian is the product of God's great power to create, for only God can create a new heart and a new spirit in the bossom of the person who exercises faith in the shed blood of Jesus. Evil proceeds from the heart, and when God borns one into His family He creates in that one new heart, a new life and gives that one divine nature. Old ways and habits and practices of life are passed away and the love of God fills the vacancy. There is such a deep radical change that takes place when a person is born again, that the change can be easily recognized by the unbelievers.
